Animal Farm

July Pick of SOL Book Club. 2020

This book, Animal Farm, is about the story of communism evolvement which is well explained by the fairy story of the animals. I bet that no any other book can explain the concept of the communism well like the book of Animal Farm. I think this is why the book is very popular and famous worldwide. Here, I would like to tell you as to 2 characters that play their roles very well in this fairy tale, and they are Boxer, who is one of the royal, stubborn followers, and Napoleon, who is a greedy, evil leader of the followers.

" All animals are equal, 
but some animals are more equal than others. "

Boxer, a horse, is played a role of the normal animal who believes in the ideas of communism without any doubt and criticism. She is young and strong, but illiterate. She believes that communism will bring the bright future to her as long as she follows the ideas or the concepts of communism. However, in the end, her unconditional belief, endless sacrifice, and uncritical thought lead her to the vain and lonely death. In reality, she reminds me of the people who live in the countries of socialism or communism and live on such as the hope that the pig, Napoleon, is trying to give to them.

Napoleon, a pig, is the leader of the animals and the hero of the rebellion against the humans. His behavior shows us how to expel his people in order to obtain the fruitful result from the rebellion alone and how to keep his authority to control the animals without any criticism. He is so clever, greedy, and evil that he can manipulate all the animals in the farm to get whatever he wants. Even the oaths all the animals made after the rebellion have been revised cleverly for his own benefits. Eventually, he is trying to mingle with the humans whom he has expelled to get the freedom from them. It is saying to me that there is no enemy in the long run. If the mutual interest between even enemies can be achieved well, they can shake their hands one another proving that they are not enemies any more.

I have learned that, in any situation of communism, socialism, or democracy, we have to have our own critical thoughts about any occasions happening in our society, and, on the contrary, we also have to be open to listen to and accept any critical opinions from other people who may be opposed to our thoughts. The more, I think, we have an interest in our society and the critical thought about the things happening, the more our future and hope may thrive as we wish
